About Us

History

The Faculty of Agriculture was formally established in the 1982/83 Academic Session and had its foundation Dean (Prof. L.B. Olugbemi) in 1983. At the inception of the Faculty in 1982/83, sixty-seven (67) students were admitted to the 100 Level for the B. Agric. Program. Thereafter, the University Senate decided to establish three new departments to meet the needs of the larger society in other areas and disciplines. Consequently, in 2006, the Department of Home Economics and Food Science was birthed to offer two programs (B.Sc. Home Economics and B.Sc. Food Science) with the first set of students admitted in the 2007/2008 Academic Session. The Departments of Forest Resources Management and Aquaculture and Fisheries followed in 2010 and 2014 for B. Forestry and Wildlife and B. Aquaculture and Fisheries, respectively, with the first sets of students admitted in 2010/2011 and 2013/2014 Academic Sessions for the two programs.

Currently, the Dean of the Faculty superintends over eight departments, including Agric. economics & Farm management, Agric. Extension & Rural Development, Agronomy, Crop Protection, Animal production, Home Economics & Food Science; Forest Resources Management and Aquaculture & Fisheries, offering four programs in total.

The student population in the Faculty is currently 4344, and the Faculty has graduated several thousand undergraduate and postgraduate students in the four Academic programs since its establishment. Although there were only seven (7) academic staff members on the ground at the inception, the staffing situation in the Faculty has improved tremendously to over 100 Academic Staff for the various programs. High academic standards are maintained by counseling students to work hard, ensuring a conducive atmosphere for studying, the highest credibility of undergraduate admission, and good standing regulations at all times. Above all, there is enthusiasm and dedication of the teaching, technical, and administrative staff in the Faculty with efficient quality assurance personnel across all the departments under the (current) coordination of Prof. Raphael O. Babatunde.

The policies adopted and practiced by the Faculty in pursuit of academic excellence and maintenance of the academic atmosphere derive primarily from the laid-down policies of the University. These include; encouraging staff/student seminars, attending the University’s Inaugural Lecture series, other special lectures, symposia, and learned conferences hosted by the Departments, Faculty, and elsewhere. In history, the Faculty had enjoyed the selfless services and quality leaderships of the following past Deans: Professor L.B. Olugbemi (1983-1985); Professor D.S. Adegboye (1985-1989); Professor O.O.
